The Cardinals took part in a six-team scrimmage, hosted by Osseo, today facing five opponents during the 3 1/2-hour event, meeting up with DeLaSalle, Minnetonka, Legacy Christian and Northwest Suburban Conference foes Osseo and Centennial.
With nearly two weeks to go until the season opener, Sept. 8, at home versus Heritage Christian, the Cardinals are making strides towards being ready.
"I think they're starting to figure out our defensive strategy," head coach Heidi Ulwelling said of her team. "We're doing a better job of reading hitters."
That much was clear in the team's final scrimmage of the day versus Centennial. A state tournament qualifier last season and one of the state's top-ranked teams in the preseason coaches poll, the Cougars are a good benchmark for the Cardinals to check themselves against.
"I thought we battled Centennial even up," Ulwelling said. "It would have been an interesting score."
With senior starter and co-captain Ashley Engen absent from today's scrimmages, Coon Rapids was forced to change its lineup.
"Despite not having one of our senior captains there, I thought we played well," Ulwelling said. "I thought we handled competitive adversity well today."
However, there is still more to do before Sept. 8.
"We still have plenty to work on before then," Ulwelling added. "We need to work on more aggressive serving, being quicker in transition and overall communication.
"We still haven't put in our offense yet but that will come. The name of the game is ball control and defense and we're making good progress in those areas."
